Before we went to bed we turned on a heat lamp. Every morning we found all six puppies right under the lamp. They slept in a little pile.

“What will we do with six puppies?” I asked my grandmother one day.

“We’ll find people who need them.”

“Need them?” I was surprised. “What can puppies do for people?”

Grandma smiled her slow smile. Her kind eyes were soft.

“A puppy is for loving, Elizabeth. We will find people who need a puppy to love,” she said.

I thought about what my grandmother said. The puppies were crawling now with their eyes scrunched shut.

Were there six people in the world who needed a puppy to love?
